Postdoctoral Benefits

The Postdoctoral Benefit package is maintained and administered by the Human Resources Department. Most postdocs are eligible for the University’s generous benefit package. In general, a postdoc must be paid by a grant or fellowship awarded through Washington University and receive a WU paycheck to be benefits eligible. Postdocs who receive a fellowship paid directly to them at their home address or HHMI postdocs are generally not benefits-eligible. However other circumstances may apply - please check with your department administrator or Human Resources regarding eligibility requirements. Depending upon a postdoc’s status as an employee or non-employee, Federal Tax Law will dictate how the benefits are administered.

Benefits may include:

  • Health/Dental/Vision Insurance (single, +1 and + family coverage available)
  • Long Term Disability Insurance
  • Basic Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance
  • Optional Investment Savings:  403(b) program, for employee postdocs only, subject to postdoctoral employee plan provisions
  • Tuition Remission under Postdoctoral Tuition Plan
  • Paid Time Away – 15 days vacation, 12 days sick, funeral, military, jury, family/personal/medical (subject to FMLA for postdoctoral employees)
  • Workers’ Compensation & Unemployment Insurance (employee postdocs only)

Complete information on the benefit package, including insurance premium rates, is located on the Postdoctoral Research Appointees benefits section of the WUSM Human Resources Benefits Website. If you have benefit specific questions, please contact John Henderson, HR Benefits Manager at 362-9341 or john.henderson@wustl.edu

The Human Resources website also has information on additional benefits such as family care programs and university services that postdocs may be eligible for.
