Research

Volvox carteri is the multicellular sister of the unicellular algae Chlamydomonas. Volvox exhibits an ancestral mode of cellular differentiation, in which the germline and soma are spatially segregated into 16 large, gonidial cells and ~2000 small, somatic cells, respectively. Analysis of the gonidial transcriptome through RNAseq will allow for comparisons to be made with the Chlamydomonas transcriptome and, in turn, help elucidate the genetic underpinnings of cellular differentiation in a simple multicellular organism.
