Becoming a Division Faculty Member

Since its inception over 25 years ago as an integrated administrative unit that functions apart from the normal Departmental structures, the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences has developed into the major organization at Washington University that focuses on interdisciplinary graduate education and associated academic activities in the biological and biomedical sciences. The Division has two missions. The broader of these is its central role in biological and biomedical sciences at Washington University. This is exemplified by the wide variety of courses and seminar series that it sponsors.

The second mission relates to the role of the Division in pre-doctoral training. The Division provides administrative support for all Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. students in the biological and biomedical sciences that are enrolled in the University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Division is responsible for recruiting predoctoral students of the highest caliber and ensuring that their academic training and research experience prepares them for productive and creative scientific careers.

Membership in the Division enables faculty members to supervise the research efforts of doctoral candidates enrolled in Division Programs. Division membership also carries important responsibilities including: financial support of students doing thesis work in the laboratory; active participation in Division functions; and service in the areas of recruitment, interviewing, course instruction, student advising, and committee memberships.

Currently, students are financially supported by the Division for their first 16 months of graduate school. After that period of support, the stipend and resident candidate and health fees (not tuition) become the mentor’s responsibility. If the mentor is unable to provide full support, it is the responsibility of the mentor’s Department/Division to do so. Therefore, when a student commits to doing his or her thesis in a laboratory, the mentor and the Department/Division Head/Chair will be asked to sign a thesis affiliation form to acknowledge this financial responsibility. This financial commitment of mentors has enabled us to both expand our graduate programs and maintain competitive stipends.
