Cancer Biology Pathway and Postdoctoral Program |

**Predoctoral**
This Pathway is open to Ph.D. students from any Program in the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences. Selection will be made from students entering their 2nd and 3rd years of graduate training. Students will be selected from laboratories of Siteman Cancer Center members, and chosen by a panel selected by the Siteman Cancer Center Basic Science Leadership Committee. In 2009, three predoctoral (Ph.D., not M.D. or M.D./Ph.D.) students will be selected to begin a 2-year course of study. Two students will receive Siteman Cancer Center funding at the Washington University stipend rate, with tuition and fees covered by the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences; one will receive funding capped at the NIH training grant rate. The funding start date will be September 1, 2009.
**Postdoctoral**
In addition, for the Cancer Biology Postdoctoral Program, two postdoctoral (Ph.D.) appointees will be selected for a 2-year period of support at the NIH training grant stipend level (additional compensation is the responsibility of the host lab). Postdoctoral appointee applicants must be:
- within two years of receiving their Ph.D. at the time of application
- a US citizen or permanent resident
- training in the laboratory of a Siteman Cancer Center member who is an identified faculty mentor on the Molecular Oncology Training Grant (PI: Dr. Lee Ratner)
The start date of the program funding will be September 1, 2009.
Note: Postdoctoral appointees must be US citizens or have a green card.
Information for all
Predoctoral trainees will register for a Special Topics Course (Dr. Lee Ratner, Course Master), an overview course of cancer biology examining a different topic each week in molecular, cell biological or immunological aspects of cancer biology. Postdoctoral appointees must attend the class but do not need to register for credit. This course has been offered in alternating spring semesters beginning in 2004.
The second Special Topics Core (Dr. David Wilson, Course Master) is a course of in-depth analysis of basic and clinical aspects of three topics in cancer biology. This course has been offered in alternate spring semesters beginning in 2003. Pre doctoral trainees will participate each fall as registered-for-credit in one of the following journal clubs; postdoctoral appointees are required to participate in the special topics courses, but not register for credit.

- Hematology/Oncology Journal Club
- Molecular & Developmental Biology Journal Club
- Hematopoietic Development and Malignancy
- Molecular Oncology
- Genetics
- Signaling
- Immunology
- Other journal clubs with the approval of Dr. Lee Ratner
Applicants cannot currently be supported by an NIH training grant
Predoctoral Applicants
Complete application must include:
- Clearly list that you are applying for the predoctoral Cancer Biology Pathway
- Name, social security number or birth date, address, academic program and year, citizenship, and racial/ethnic background
- Contact information (e-mail and telephone)
- CV or resume
- Name of the Siteman Cancer Center laboratory in which the students is or will be working
- One paragraph description of why the student is interested in the program
- One page description of the students Ph.D. dissertation goals
- Recommendation letter from the faculty sponsor
- Recommendation letters from two other faculty members
- Clear photocopy of student’s Washington University identification badge
Postdoctoral Application
Complete application must include:
- Clearly list that you are applying for the postdoctoral Cancer Biology Program

- Name of the Siteman Cancer Center Molecular Training Grant mentor in whose lab you are working
- One paragraph description of your interest in the program
- One page description of your current work in the laboratory
- Recommendation letter from the faculty mentor (on the Molecular Oncology Training Grant)
- Recommendation letters from two other Washington University faculty members
- Clear photocopy of postdoc’s Washington University identification badge
