For the first time, the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is organizing a National Postdoc Appreciation Day. WU will join other institutions nationwide in celebrating the significant contribution that postdoctoral scholars make to the U.S. scientific research enterprise and to increase awareness of this contribution. To celebrate, the Office of Post Graduate Affairs and the WU Postdoc Society will host a Happy Hour for postdocs and their faculty advisors. Beer, wine and appetizers will be served. St. Louis Biotech Symposium featuring Dr. Grace Wong

Dr. Grace Wong has worked for Genentech, Millennium, AstraZeneca and Serono on new drug discovery in a variety of therapeutic areas. Under supervision of Dr John Schrader and Sir Gus Nossal, Dr. Wong earned a PhD at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Australia. In the USA, Grace did a postdoc with Dr. David Goeddel at Genentech where she advanced basic research discoveries to product development in 1996. Dr. Wong was the Head of Apoptosis Research at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, the Section Head of Molecular Genetics at AstraZeneca and the Head of Cytokine Genomics at Serono. She has been awarded 13 scholarships from Australian and American organizations and received 5 Recognition Awards from Genentech and Serono.
Dr. Wong has been invited to give presentations at 153 international conferences including the Nobel Symposium (Sweden, 1994). She has published 93 papers and filed 28 patents. Some of her publications (3 Nature, 1 Science, 3 Cell, 5 PNAS, and 7 J. Immunol) have received 300-1000 citations. Dr. Wong has founded Actokine Therapeutics (www.actokine.com) for new drug advancements for cancer, obesity, CNS and emerging viral diseases. She also founded Student Vision (www.studentvision.org) and the Nobel Pauling Symposia (www.pauling.us) to help scientists of all ages in biotechnology.

Dr. Salvemini received her PhD from the University of London, UK, and subsequently underwent postdoctoral training in Monsanto, St. Louis. She has worked as a Research Scientist for GD Searle and was a Senior Vice President for Metaphore Pharmaceuticals, both still in St. Louis. She is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiological Sciences, and of Internal Medicine, St. Louis University Medical School. She has over 10 patents pending and has valuable experience in the field of industrial research and development.
