POSTDOCTORAL POLICIES
The Washington University Postdoctoral Education Policy (click to view) oversees postdoctoral appointments University-wide. Currently, there are postdocs in the Schools of Medicine, Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Law and Social Work. Those in Clinical Training Programs or Residencies are excluded from these policies.

At the School of Medicine, the School of Medicine Implementation Policy (click to view) oversees postdoctoral appointments in conjunction with the WU Postdoctoral Education Policy. Additionally, the WU School of Medicine (WUSM) has also implemented a process to request an extension to train past five years and to request a temporarily reduced schedule. Please see below for more information.

Postdoctoral Appointments
University-wide, postdocs are appointed in the titles of Postdoctoral Research Scholar (non-employee status) or Postdoctoral Research Associate (employee status). Postdoctoral training is limited to five years, includes time spent in either title or at other institutions, and excludes clinical training.

Postdoc Salary/Stipend Amounts
The WU School of Medicine minimum postdoc salary/stipend amount is currently $36,000 per year, effective July 1, 2009. This is the minimum amount, and individual stipends/salaries should be discussed with the faculty member making the appointment. It is recommended that postdocs be reviewed annually and given raises as appropriate. For other WU Schools, please contact the department administrator or school contact for information on postdoc salary/stipend guidelines.

Postdoctoral Benefits
Most postdocs are eligible for the University’s generous benefit package - please speak with your department administrator or Human Resources regarding eligibility requirements. Depending upon a postdoc’s status as an employee or non-employee, Federal Tax Law will dictate how the benefits are administered. Benefits may include:
  1. Health/Dental/Vision Insurance (single, +1 and + family coverage available)
  2. Long Term Disability Benefit
  3. Basic Term Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
  4. Optional Investment Savings:
    1. Tax Deferred Annuity (TDA), for non-employee postdocs
    2. 403(b) program, for employee postdocs only, subject to postdoctoral employee plan provisions
  5. Tuition Remission under Postdoctoral Tuition Plan (click for more information)
  6. Paid Time Away – 15 days vacation, 12 days sick, funeral, military, jury, family/personal/medical (subject to FMLA for postdoctoral employees)
  7. Workers’ Compensation & Unemployment Insurance (employee postdocs only)
Complete information on the benefit package, including insurance rates, is located on the WUSM Human Resources Benefits Website (http://medschoolhr.wustl.edu).
The description above is intended as a summary of the benefits and is not intended to replace the official plan documents which control benefits offered. WUSM reserves the right to change any of its policies and/or benefits at any time including those covered here.

WU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES
Per the WU Postdoctoral Education policy, Washington University limits postdoctoral training to five years. Extensions to the five-year limit must be approved by the Postdoc Policy Review Committee and are generally granted for extenuating circumstances only, such as family, medical or personal reasons or a complete change of research area/lab. Request for Extension - Guidelines & Form

Effective September 2005, the School of Medicine has approved guidelines for Postdoctoral Appointments on a Temporarily Reduced Schedule. This allows postdoctoral appointees to train on a temporarily reduced schedule for extenuating circumstances upon agreement by both the faculty mentor and the postdoctoral appointee, and approval by the department head and the Postdoc Policy Review Committee. Please see the guidelines for specific instructions and to access the form to request this arrangement.
