Undergraduate Research Symposium in the
Biological Sciences and Psychology

The 2009 Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Biological Sciences and Psychology will be hosted by Washington University in St. Louis on the weekend of October 30- November 1, 2009

The Midstates Science and Mathematics Consortium consists of 13 liberal arts colleges and 2 research universities. The Consortium seeks to promote effective collaboration among faculty at the member institutions; to improve undergraduate science and mathematics education; and to assist with the research efforts of the faculty at the undergraduate colleges and of the undergraduate students at all of the member institutions.

The Consortium coordinates activities including symposia on undergraduate research, faculty development workshops, and a speaker series through which individual faculty members visit other member schools to share information.

The symposium will begin Friday evening, October 30. Scientific sessions will take place on the campus of Washington University School of Medicine.

Undergraduate students and faculty will present their research orally or in a poster format. The agenda for the symposium will be available soon.

Hide details for Student PresentationsStudent Presentations

Student participants are expected to present the results of their research in either an oral or poster format. Oral presentations will be scheduled at 15 minute intervals, allowing 12 minutes for the presentation and 3 minutes for questions. A slide projector (allowing use of 2x2 slides) and an overhead projector will be available. Powerpoint may be used; information regarding this will be sent at a later date. Poster presentations will allow participants to display their experimental results on a tackboard panel measuring, approximately 5 feet (width) x 3.5 feet. A title banner including the project title, authors, and affiliation(s) should also be prepared.
Hide details for Financial ArrangementsFinancial Arrangements

Transportation, housing, Metro Link passes from the Airport, and meals will be provided for 4-5 students and one faculty member from each Consortium institution. Additional participants may be accommodated depending on the availability of funds. The institutional representative from each Consortium school will coordinate registration from his or her campus. Participants traveling by plane will be provided with airline tickets by the Consortium office. Once registration forms have been received, the institutional representative will be provided with information for making plane reservations with the MIdstates travel agent.

Participants should time their travel so that they arrive in St. Louis by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2005.
  • If arriving by plane, you should locate the Metro Link light rail transit system station in each terminal. In the main terminal (concourses A-D) the Metro Link is located near Exit MT-2. If you arrive in the East Terminal (i.e. by Southwest Airlines) you will find the Metro Link located near the upper level of the parking garage. From either station, you will take the eastbound Metro Link to the "Central West End" stop (the fare is approximately $3.00). The hotel is a 2-3 minute walk due north of the Metro Link exit, go right at the end top of the stairs. Travel to the hotel via Metro Link takes approximately 15 minutes with trains running every 7-15 minutes (depending on time of day).
  • If arriving by car, you will find The Parkway Hotel located in the Central West End area just east of Kingshighway at the corner of Euclid Ave. and Forest Park Blvd. Garage parking is available at the hotel for guests for $5.00/day.
