Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis Program
The objective of the Ances laboratory is to look at the effects of dementia on brain structure and function. Our laboratory studies both HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND) and Alzheimer`s Disease (AD). Our group: 1) characterizes HAND using blood oxygen level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD fMRI) 2) characterizes the effects of AD on BOLD functional networks. For both diseases (HAND and AD) we compare neuroimaging results to both neuropsychological and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. The ultimate goal is to create a non-invasive neuroimaging tool for early detection and treatment of dementia.
