Research Abstract:

Our long term goal is to elucidate gut and hepatic determinants of metabolic disease, including diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and their complications. We focus on membrane transport in the hepatocyte and enterocyte, the signal transduction pathways associated with influx of metabolites across the plasma membrane, and the targeting of these pathways to prevent or mitigate disease. My laboratory has two major foci, which are closely integrated.
Lab focus 1:
Metabolism and signal transduction pathways activated by sugar and uric acid.
Lab focus 2:
New approaches to fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome treatment.
