  • Identify interventions that may improve uteroplacental perfusion in chronic fetal asphyxia and to enhance intrauterine fetal growth and development

Research Abstract:

The study of the effects of anesthetic drugs and changing physiological environment on uteroplacental blood flow and the fetal hemodynamic response to asphyxia - both ultrasound studies in humans and laboratory studies in rodents (using BOLD functional MRI and immunohistochemical markers). The ultimate aim of these studies is to identify interventions that may improve uteroplacental perfusion in chronic fetal asphyxia and to enhance intrauterine fetal growth and development. Specific anesthesia-related interventions that are being studied in humans include continuous epidural local anesthesia in preeclampsia and CPAP in obstructive sleep apnea. Other clinical studies relevant to obstetric anesthesia include: experimental pain and clinical pain studies in humans (pharmacokinetic/dynamic studies of spinal cord analgesics) and national studies on the provision of clinical obstetric anesthesia services.
