Research Abstract:

The primary focus of my research is in clinical research informatics, but I also have strong interest in other areas of clinical informatics, including usability of clinical and consumer-facing systems and mobile health. A major thread throughout my research foci is solving practical clinical or clinical research problems through the development and use of fundamental computer science or informatics theories and approaches.

The most recent focus of my research is in the use of information fusion as applied to the electronic medical record to support information retrieval, clinical trials eligibility matching and other forms of clinical decision support. In September 2012, I received an R01 from the National Library of Medicine entitled, “An Information Fusion Approach to Longitudinal Health Records,” to support my work in the use of the EHR data to support automatic clinical trials prescreening. This line of research has led to approximately 20 peer-reviewed publications, appearing in the top computational linguistics conference venues as well as 3 journal articles in leading informatics venues.
