Research summary
Mechanisms of Intercellular Mitochondrial Transfer and Uptake
Mitochondrial transfer is a process by which cells can transfer their mitochondria to other cells. Previous work in the Brestoff Lab and other groups has shown that cells with impaired aerobic respiration can rescue their respiratory capacity by capturing cell-free mitochondria in their local environment. The genes necessary for mitochondrial uptake and subsequent metabolic rescue remain largely uncharacterized. In the Brestoff Lab, my project focuses on identifying and characterizing genes required for this uptake process.
