Research summary
Thalamocortical mechanism of chronic pain aversiveness

My research has characterized a previously unrecognized thalamocortical pathway from the anteromedial thalamic nucleus to the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, that is positioned to
modulate the affective, spontaneous component of chronic neuropathic pain, distinct from basic sensory reflexes. AM thalamus could be a novel and more precise neuromodulation target for treating the aversive, emotionally distressing symptoms that make chronic pain so difficult to manage.
