Research Abstract:

We study the vaginal microbiota and its importance for women`s health. Most women have lactobacilli in their vaginas, a situation which is widely believed to have beneficial properties for the host. But many women (1/3 of all women in U.S.) show another pattern, with few lactobacilli and instead much higher levels of a diverse mixture of bacteria many of which can cause serious infections on their own. We are developing models of infections and co-infections and helping to define some of the basic physiology of vaginal bacteria with the goal of understanding both how they interact with the host and other bacteria to encourage disease.
